What can you do to boost your immune system?

The human body consists of trillions of cells. Each cell is responsible for creating organs and tissues with specific functions. A cell that dies will be replaced by another. Chemical signals, called hormones, allow cells to communicate with each other. Hormones regulate every bodily process, from growth and development to metabolism as well as immunity.

Hormones can be described as chemicals produced by glands in the body. They travel through our bloodstream and act as messengers, controlling how our bodies function. Some hormones can be produced in the body, while others may be made outside.

The release of hormones from a hormone producing gland into the bloodstream is the beginning of hormone production. Once hormones are released they move through the bloodstream until they reach their intended organ. In some cases hormones can remain active for only a few hours. Others hormones remain active longer and still have an influence on the body's functioning long after they leave bloodstream.

Some hormones can be produced in large amounts. Others are produced in smaller amounts.

Some hormones are made at certain times in our lives. For instance, estrogen is produced during puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and old age. Estrogen assists women with breast development, bone density, and osteoporosis prevention. It promotes hair growth as well as keeping skin soft and smooth.
